Access to fresh water is a key issue for the next decades in context of global warming. The level lakes fundamental variable that needs be monitored this purpose. radar altimetry constellation brings worldwide means question. Recent advances altimeter onboard tracking modes have allowed monitoring thousands and rivers. Now, measurements are widely available with better resolution: it time drastically improve processing. waveforms over difficult analyze very different from ocean ones. We face large variety signals due surface roughness, lake geometry, environment. inversion process, named retracking, shall able describe all these components. propose here retracking based on physical simulations taking as inputs contour instrument characteristics. Fitting simulation gives height. algorithm has been tested Sentinel-3A Sentinel-3B series Occitan reservoirs (France) Swiss compared in situ references. Over small (few ha few km 2 ), unbiased root-mean-square error (ub-RMSE) than 14 cm. medium-size lakes, ub-RMSE 10 cm most them.
